Egg donation treatment

You may have tried for months or years to get pregnant on your own. If you are struggling to get pregnant, you may have considered egg donation. With the help of IVF, a donor’s eggs are fertilized with your partner’s sperm (or donor sperm) and the embryos are transferred to your uterus for implantation and pregnancy. Egg donation offers many woman the chance to get pregnant and have children.
Why use donor eggs?

You may consider donor eggs with IVF for many reasons, including the following:

  • Women with psychological or early menopause.
  • Women that do not produce eggs or are infertile as a result of chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatments.
  • Women who produce low quality eggs or who do not respond to hormones.
  • When assisted reproduction treatments have failed on various occasions.
  • Women that suffer from a genetic disease, which cannot be diagnosed in the embryo.
  • When not having access to the ovaries through surgical procedure.

Before receiving an egg donation, you will undergo extensive medical testing to ensure that you are healthy and capable of sustaining a pregnancy. The egg donor will also undergo intensive medical and psychological screening. When the chances of conceiving a baby on your own become slim, egg donation can provide you with a wonderful alternative to help you achieve your dream of having a baby.

Unlike some other European countries, egg donation or fertility treatments with donor eggs is approved by the Albanian law. In addition, Albanian law provides that children born by means of assisted reproduction techniques shall not be able to obtain information regarding the donor - similarly, the donor shall not be able to obtain information, such as the identity of the conceived child.

A common concern among those considering this treatment is about the donor selection process itself. Our policy provides that both donor and recipient shall share as many phenotypic similarities as possible, that is to encourage physical resemblance between the donor and recipient.

The donor pool of anonymous donors represents all possible phenotypes, which are all tested on health and (genetic) diseases to ensure a healthy child. The donors are usually young and healthy women. Prior to the donation, medical examinations, genetic and psychological studies are carried out.

Donor selection criteria
  • Woman between 18 and 30 years.
  • Blood Group. An important factor for those parents that want their baby to have the same blood group as their own.
  • Study of diseases: HIV, chlamydia, hepatitis, rubella, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus or syphilis, among others.
  • Chromosomal analysis for detecting possible disorders.
  • Personal and familiar background for ruling out the transmission of inherited diseases.
  • Fertility study.
  • Psychological assessment.

A slight ovarian stimulation of the donor is performed in order to obtain the eggs. The recipient woman will start a hormone treatment to synchronise with the donor and will, ultimately, receive the resulting embryos to achieve pregnancy. The remaining embryos will be frozen and cryopreserved for further treatments.

The success rates

The success rates for the egg donation process far exceed those for regular IVF. This is probably due to the fact that the donors who provide the eggs are young and don't have fertility problems themselves. In addition, the risks for miscarriage and babies with chromosomal abnormalities are also reduced since those risks can be dependent on the age of the donor, not the recipient.

Pregnancy rates depend also on the sperm of the partner, the chosen treatment and the individual response of each patient.

Thanks to oocyte donation, many women that are unable to produce their own eggs have the chance to give birth to a healthy child.
